Portland Bill (Trinity House Obelisk) Daymark
Name:
Portland Bill (Trinity House Obelisk)
Established:
1844
Current Version Built:
1844

Portland Bill's daymark, known as the Trinity House Obelisk was built in 1844 to mark the southern point of the Isle of Portland. The 4-sided structure tapers inwards towards the top and was painted entirely white, but has gradually been allowed to revert to it's natural portland stone finish in more recent times. About halfway up the tower there is raised text reading "TH 1884". Located close to the edge of the cliffs and endangered by erosion, Trinity House stopped maintaining the marker in 2002 citing that it was too expensive to justify ongoing maintenance - they had wished to remove the obelisk, but protests resulted in it being left in situ. The daymark received Grade II Listed status in 1978.
