This small octagonal concrete tower sits centrally on Sgeir Ghlas, a small skerry in Loch an Ear, on the approach to Tarbert.

The lantern room looks to be one from an old NLB lightship or automatic light float, and possibly belonged to either the Otter Rock or Skeirinoe vessels, which were retired and scrapped in the 1950s and 60s.

The lighthouse is painted white with a red roof. It displays an Isophase light with coloured sectors; a red sector covers approximately half of the lights arc towards the west, whilst significantly narrower white and green sectors cover the area between Sgeir Ghlas and Sgeotasaigh, a larger island to the east.

The light is operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board.
